We Pride Ourselves In Our School Motto: "Where Children Are Always First"

Ferndale Area Elementary School has implemented the National Standards for School Counseling Programs of the American School Counselor Association into a comprehensive developmental guidance program.

This process involved examination of the previous elementary school counseling program, identification of Ferndale Area Elementary student personal, social, academic and cognitive needs and selection of programming/curriculum that will enable our students to achieve the competencies of the National Standards for effective school counseling programs as they progress from K-6th grade.

Developmental Guidance Program

PHOTO PAGE

The Ferndale Area Elementary School has placed emphasis in their belief of educating the whole child by weaving character building skills and academics together within the framework of an elementary school philosophy. Mission statements were generated and goals and objectives defined. To enhance the developmental guidance program at Ferndale Area Elementary, seven skills of character have been incorporated into the developmental guidance services. The seven skills of character were chosen to meet the standards of the needs defined in the Ferndale Area Elementary School Needs Assessment completed during the 2002-03 school year.   Curriculum ideas and guidance related programming will be generated by teachers as well as the guidance department.  The Wise Skills Resources for Schoolwide Character Education and Caring Children making Caring Choices will be used as resource tools to aid teachers in promoting school wide character skills.

Ferndale Area Elementary Guidance Department Mission Statement

Ferndale Area Elementary school’s developmental guidance program believes that the foundation of successful learning includes education regarding the development of caring strengths that will enable students to fully experience life with integrity by making positive life decisions towards themselves, others and their community.

What does the Ferndale Area Elementary School
counseling program address?

Ferndale Area Elementary School has developed and implemented a developmental guidance program.  A developmental guidance program is a comprehensive, balanced and sequential plan that is based on the results of a building-wide needs assessment regarding the students in the Ferndale Area Elementary School.  A needs assessment reviews the social, personal, academic and career needs of students in your school.  Programming is then directed to meet needs in each grade level as well as National Standards for School Counseling Programs.  Teachers, counselor and the principal then develop class activities and counseling initiatives.  Mr. Theys and Mr. Moran have included home visits to assist in meeting the needs of children and families in the Ferndale Area School District.

Homework

"Do you have homework?" That question is probably the first thing you ask your child when he/she gets home from school.  Homework is a part of the education process.  Your child will be having homework throughout the school year.  There are several things that you can do to make homework a worthwhile experience.

·         set a regular time to do homework.

·         check your child’s book bag and planner every night.

·         use the planner to communicate with teacher.

·         have a quiet place for your child to do homework.  Remove distractions.

·         review with your child the homework assignment and make sure he/she understands what needs to be done.

·         be available to help with the assignment, but remember it is your child's homework.

·         check over the completed work.

·         give practice tests for spelling, go over addition or subtraction facts for 5-10 minutes every night.

·         try to create a ritual to read a fun book to your child at night.

Plan homework assignments for the week to avoid last minute cramming .
