About Me - Mrs. Beck
Hello! My name is Mrs. Beck, and I am the Reading Specialist here at Ferndale Area Elementary School. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Reading along with Reading Specialist Certification. My first teaching job was in Maryland where I taught 4th grade for a couple of years. Returning to Pennsylvania, I landed a position at Ferndale Area High School teaching 7th and 8th Grade Reading and serving as coach for the IU8 Interscholastic Reading Team and advisor for the Forensics Team. It was in 2006 that I began my current job of serving as Reading Specialist at the elementary school.
As Reading Specialist, I spend much of my school day working with small groups of children in kindergarten through third grade. We work on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency, comprehension, and writing skills. It is a great joy and privilege to have the opportunity to help children grow as readers and writers as they develop an enthusiasm for books and a lifelong love of reading and learning!
In addition to teaching students, I serve as part-time Literacy Coach for primary grade level classroom teachers and reading intervention staff, This position offers opportunities to share new literacy materials and offer support for classroom teachers and other staff striving to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all their students.
If you have questions or concerns about your child's reading progress, please do not hesitate to contact me. WORKING TOGETHER, WE CAN GROW GREAT READERS!
